Artist: Mavis Nampitjinpa Marks

Mavis is an accomplished Luritja Pintupi artist; born at Newhaven, 360km North West of Mpwartne (Alice Springs). She has been widely exhibited around Australia and the world. She is the sister of renowned Western Desert artists Ronnie Tjampitjinpa and Smithy Zimran Tjampitjinpa. She enjoys traveling to Kintore to visit with her sister Yuyuwa; and to Alice Springs to see her sister Gina. Mavis moved to Haasts Bluff as a teenager with her mother. When she married she moved to Mt Liebig with her husband and began to paint at the art centre there. Mavis returned to Haasts Bluff after the death of her husband, later moving to Papunya. Mavis likes to paint the women’s Ceremonial Dancing at Mt Liebig, and depicts their body painting designs. She also paints the story given to her by her grandfather of Kalipinpa, the Water Dreaming, which comes from her mother’s side. She has raised five children as her own, and her daughter Sylvana Marks, is also an artist.

Art story: Women’s Business

In this design, Mavis depicts women’s business. She paints the women’s ceremonial dancing at Mt Liebig, close to where she was born and where she has lived most of her life.

Using bold brush strokes, she depicts the designs traditionally used for ceremonial body painting.

Art centre: Ikuntji Artists

Ikuntji Artists is located in Haasts Bluff community, which is 230km west of Alice Springs, in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Ikuntji Artists was the first art centre established for women of the Western Desert art movement. Ikuntji Artists has many internationally renowned artists, who are represented in galleries and institutions around the world. Their art is famous for bold colour choice, decisive brush strokes, and rich cultural storytelling.

Woman’s Business 3/4 pants

I love them so much and they’re beautifully made, I love the feel and the print. Unfortunately they don’t quite do up around the waste so looking to make them work...roomy everywhere else. Inspiration to get off medication that puts on weight! Thank you very much for your unique designs!

Wearable Art- Love it

This pants are a true size - I bought the size 10. the fit is flattering and comfortable. The finish of the garment has great attention to detail - lined pockets and well sewed buttons and button holes. I love receiving Mavis Nampitjinpa Marks' story and the story of the art work: Women's Business. Definitely recommend the investment in wearable art. Had people admire the pants and ask me about the print and its meaning. The whole experience of purchase was personal and I felt connected to Magpie Goose and your mission. This is great way to be able to invest in art and wear it.

It’s love! True love!

I absolutely adore these pants! I had to return the originally purchased pair as they were too big. No problem for the MG crew, a replacement pair in my perfect size was mailed pronto! They have been my go-to since they arrived. The fit is true to size & the pockets are perfectly placed (& useful- why are decent pockets still so rare?!). Thank you Magpie Goose .... when I’m in my MG bold & beautiful Women’s Busines 3/4 pants I look & feel bold & beautiful!
