Artist and art centre

Dora Diaguma is a Kuninjku woman from Maningrida, in Western Central Arnhem land. Her design is hand screen printed by Publisher Textiles in Sydney on behalf of Bábbarra Women’s Centre in Maningrida. ‘Bábbarra’ is a big billabong near Maningrida – it also means ‘girls’ or ‘women’. The Women’s Centre is made up of women from more than 12 language groups in the Maningrida region, and is home to Bábbarra Designs (founded in 1989) a social enterprise where artists design textiles that tell the ancestral stories of their Arnhem Land country and cultures.

Art story

Dora designed Murnubbarr Karrolka (flying magpie geese) in 2003. Murnubbarr (magpie geese) are a waterbird found in abundance in the wetland areas of Kakadu and western Arnhem Land. Murnubbarrare a sustainably hunted and enjoyed manme (bush food). They are known to fly long distances, particularly in the wet season.

Treat me right

Design is printed on cotton with quality inks and then heat-set; designs are colourfast. Each metre of fabric is hand-printed and is unique - fabulous variations often occur!

Please treat your wearable art with love and care – we recommend cold hand wash, dry in shade, and reverse iron.
