Artist and art centre
Osmond Kantilla, a master printer who has over 20 years experience designing and screenprinting at Tiwi Design, created his ‘pandanus’ design in 1986. Osmond’s country is Wurruranku, and his skin group is Marntimapila (Stone).
Osmond’s design is hand screen printed at Tiwi Design, Wurrumiyanga (Nguiu), on Bathurst Island (Tiwi Islands), 80km North of Darwin. Tiwi Design aims to promote, preserve and enrich Tiwi culture – it supports over 100 artists to do painting, wood sculptures, textiles, ceramics, pandanus weaving and printmaking.
Pandanus is Osmond’s father’s clan group.
“My brothers and sisters follow the footsteps of my father’s clan when we dance at ceremony. My dad used to be a song writer and a dancer and that is why I did a design called pandanus in memory of him. When you see that pandanus tree out bush it is very green with long pointy leaves. I had those ideas in mind when I made my design.”

Treat me right
Design is printed on silk with quality inks and then heat-set; designs are colourfast. Each metre of fabric is hand-printed and is unique - fabulous variations often occur!
Please treat your wearable art with love and care – we recommend cold hand wash, dry in shade, and reverse iron.
