Artist and art centre

Elizabeth Kandabuma has passed away; the community have asked that her bio not be written.

Elizabeth’s design is hand screen printed by Publisher Textiles in Sydney for Bábbarra Women’s Centre in Maningrida. ‘

Bábbarra’ is a big billabong near Maningrida – it also means ‘girls’ or ‘women’. The Women’s Centre is made up of women from more than 12 language groups in the Maningrida region, and is home to Bábbarra Designs (founded in 1989) a social enterprise where artists design and handprint textiles that tell the ancestral stories of their Arnhem Land country and cultures.

Art story

This Kun-ngol design was created in 2006. It depicts certain clouds that signal to people of central Arnhem Land that the end of the wet season is approaching. After months of daily monsoonal rain in Arnhem Land, these clouds are light and fluffy, not like the dark heavy clouds of the monsoonal sky.

At the time of the Kun-ngol clouds, people know the country will soon dry up and the cold season (dry season) will arrive. When the Kun-ngol clouds appear, all of the billabongs are already filled, the rivers are high and the country is brimming with life and fresh new growth after months of fresh water pouring from the sky.

Size and fit

Laura is 175cm tall – she wears size 10 singlet top.

6 8 10 12 14 16
bust 81.8 86.8 91.8 96.8 101.8 106.8
hem 78 83 88 93 98 103

Note: This top no longer has buttons down the back. Sizing is slightly different from the previous tops that did have buttons (now a slimmer fit so go up a size from the button top if you tried that on! - i.e. if you were an 8 with buttons, a 10 probably fits without buttons

Treat me right

Design is printed on cotton with quality inks and then heat-set; designs are colourfast. Each metre of fabric is hand-printed and is unique - fabulous variations often occur!

Please treat your wearable art with love and care – we recommend cold hand wash, dry in shade, and reverse iron.
