We Made a Mistake - but was it a Happy Accident?

If you've been following the Magpie Goose x Quandamooka collection, you may have noticed something a little different about our latest release.

Woven in History by Kyra Mancktelow has more garment styles than any other design in the collection.

And it wasn't exactly planned.

Like many Australian fashion brands, we've had to become much more cautious about production over the past few years. Rising costs and changing consumer spending habits mean we simply can't predict demand the way we once could.

A few years ago, it wasn't uncommon for us to release a new print across five or six garment styles. These days, we're more likely to produce three or four. It's a way of managing risk while continuing to produce collections, support artists, manufacture ethically in Australia, and create the quality garments our community expects from us.

So what happened with Woven in History?

Quite simply, we accidentally ordered our old quantity of fabric.

Instead of our current, more conservative print run, we screen printed around 500 metres of fabric — the volume we would have produced several years ago.

Once we realised what had happened, there was only one thing to do: make the most of it.

The silver lining is that we've been able to create more styles than usual and experiment with a few new ideas. Alongside some familiar favourites, we've introduced a brand-new Kaftan and updated one of our most popular patterns. Our Cropped Blouse has evolved into the new Relaxed Blouse, featuring a little extra length and an easy, effortless fit. It's quickly become a favourite in the office — and Amanda's personal pick from the collection.

We're hoping this turns out to be a very happy accident.

Woven in History is a beautiful design by Quandamooka artist Kyra Mancktelow, celebrating the weaving traditions of Quandamooka women through depictions of Gulayi (women's dilly bags). It's a print rich with story, culture and craftsmanship — and one we felt deserved the opportunity to shine across a wider range of garments.

Why invest in a Magpie Goose outfit?

Every Magpie Goose garment begins with an artist's story.

When you purchase from us, you're choosing Aboriginal-owned fashion that directly supports First Nations artists through paid licensing agreements. You're choosing clothing made ethically in Australia, produced in limited quantities, and designed to be worn for years rather than seasons.

We don't chase trends. We launch artworks.

Each print is a collaboration. Each garment carries a story. And every purchase helps create economic opportunities for artists, manufacturers and creative communities across Australia.

So if you've had your eye on Woven in History, now is the perfect time to explore the collection. With more styles available than usual, there may never be another opportunity quite like this.

Here's hoping our mistake becomes your new favourite outfit.
